Inflation Calculator

The inflation calculator answers two questions about money losing value: how much money you need today to buy the same as N years ago, and what will be left of your sum after N years at the current inflation rate. Enter the amount, the average annual inflation and the period — the calculator shows the equivalent in money, the price index and the loss of purchasing power. The calculation is instant, on your device.

How to use the calculator

“Amount equivalent” mode: enter the amount, the year it relates to, and the year you want the equivalent for. The calculator shows how much money of the second year is needed for the same purchase. The equivalent year can be later or earlier — the conversion works both ways. “Purchasing power” mode: enter an amount and a period to see what share of goods and services it will buy after that time.

Precision and rounding

The calculation runs at full multiplier precision (mile = 1609.344 meters, pound = 0.45359237 kilograms — exact definitions); rounding happens only for display. That is more than enough for everyday tasks; for engineering work check your industry standards.

Where to get the inflation rate

For everyday estimates use the average inflation of recent years for your country — published by the statistics office and the central bank. In Russia the 2015–2024 average is about 7–8% per year, in the US 3–4%, in high-inflation countries it can be two- or three-digit. Even more precise is the “By country data” mode: the calculator converts the amount using the actual price index for each year (World Bank data).

Inflation and savings deposits

A deposit’s real return = deposit rate − inflation. At 8% inflation a 10% deposit makes you only 2% richer per year, while a 6% deposit makes you 2% poorer even though the balance grows. Use the calculator together with the deposit calculator: compare the final deposit amount with the inflation equivalent to see the real change in your capital.

The estimate is indicative. Actual inflation varies year to year, and personal inflation depends on your basket of goods.

Frequently asked questions

How much were 1000 rubles in 2000 worth today?
At an average inflation of 10% per year, 1,000 ₽ from 2000 is equivalent to roughly 1,000 × 1.1^26 ≈ 11,918 ₽ today. Use “Amount equivalent” mode, enter 1000, the year 2000 and the current year for an exact figure.
How is the amount equivalent calculated?
By the compound interest formula: equivalent = amount × (1 + r)^n, where r is the annual inflation rate and n is the number of years between the dates. At 8% inflation, 50,000 ₽ from ten years ago equals about 107,946 ₽ today.
Why does money in my account “melt” even though I spend nothing?
Purchasing power falls with inflation: at 10% annual inflation, in a year your money buys ~9.1% less, in five years ~38% less. The calculator shows this loss in “Purchasing power” mode.
What inflation rate should I use?
Use the average inflation of the last 5–10 years in your country: about 7–8% for Russia, 3–4% for the US, higher for countries with unstable economies. For long-term plans (10+ years) it is safer to use the upper bound.
Is this calculator a contraception or diagnostic tool?
No. This is an inflation calculator; the question does not apply. For money questions only: deposits, purchasing power and price equivalents.
