Tip Calculator

The tip calculator works out the tip on your bill and the total to pay. Choose the percentage the easy way – with a preset button, a slider or exact input – add guests to split the bill evenly, or enter the tip amount manually, and add guests to split the bill evenly. The calculation is instant and happens on your device.

How to use the calculator

Enter the bill amount. Set the tip percentage one of three ways: a preset button (0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), the slider for quick browsing, or exact input in the field (decimals work too, for example 12.5%). If the bill is shared, enter the number of guests – the calculator shows what each person pays. Or switch the mode and enter the tip amount directly – the percentage is then calculated automatically.

How much to tip

In the US and Canada, tipping is a well-established part of how service staff are paid. At sit-down restaurants the norm is 15–20% of the bill: 15% for good service, 18–20% for excellent. At buffets and for takeout 10% is fine, and at coffee shops people often just leave the change. Tips are expected rather than optional: in many states servers earn a reduced minimum wage, so tips make up a large share of their income. Check the bill first – some restaurants add an automatic gratuity (usually 18%) for large parties. In Australia and New Zealand service is paid differently: a tip is appreciated but never required.

How the tip is calculated

The formula is simple: tip = bill × percent ÷ 100, and the total to pay is the bill plus the tip. Example: a $60 bill with a 15% tip is $9, so the total is $69. In amount mode you enter the tip directly and the percentage is worked out automatically. When you split the bill, the total is divided by the number of guests – the calculator rounds to the cent.

How to split the bill with a group

When a group splits a bill evenly, it is easiest to work out the total with tips first and then divide it among everyone – exactly how this calculator works. If everyone pays for their own order, simply split the items on the check and share the tip, since the whole table is served. If you already know how much you want to leave, enter the tip amount directly – the percentage is calculated automatically.

This calculator is for information only. The tip amount is always at your discretion.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US and Canada the norm is 15–20% at sit-down restaurants: 15% for good service, 18–20% for excellent. Buffets and takeout usually get 10%. If the bill shows an automatic gratuity (common for parties of six or more), the tip is already included.
How do I calculate a tip from the bill?
Multiply the bill by the percentage and divide by 100. Example: $80 × 15 ÷ 100 = $12 tip, total $92. The calculator does this instantly – enter the amount and pick a percentage with a preset or the slider.
How do I split the bill between several people?
Work out the total with the tip and divide by the number of guests. Example: a $100 bill with a 15% tip comes to $115, which is $28.75 each for four people. The calculator has a split field that does this automatically.
Can I tip when paying by card?
Yes, almost everywhere tips by card are accepted: the terminal will offer to add a tip before payment, or the waiter will run the total with the tip included. The calculator helps you know the total in advance: enter the bill and a percentage – or the tip amount directly.
Do I tip on the bill before or after tax?
The common practice in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total – the difference is small. Enter whichever amount you choose in the calculator: the tip is a percentage of exactly what you type in.
The tip is already included in the bill – what now?
Look for the line "gratuity" or "service charge" on the check – if it is there, the tip is already included (usually 15–18%). Adding more is not required, though a little extra for exceptional service is always welcome.
