Fuel Cost Calculator: How Much a Trip Costs and How Far a Tank Takes You
Road-trip season is in full swing and gas is not getting cheaper. We have launched the Fuel Cost Calculator: it answers the two questions every driver asks — how much a trip costs and how many miles you can cover on the money you have.
Trip cost in thirty seconds
Enter three numbers: your car’s fuel consumption (liters per 100 km), the distance to your destination and the price at the pump. The calculator instantly shows how much fuel you need and what it costs. A separate line shows the cost per kilometer — handy for comparing cars and routes. A 300 km trip at 8 l/100 km and $1.50 per liter comes to $36 — no more mental arithmetic.
The reverse problem: range on a budget
The second mode works the other way round. Enter an amount — say, what is left on your card — and the calculator shows how many kilometers it covers. Useful when payday is far away and the fuel light is on: “Will $20 get me to the station?” Now you know the answer in advance.
Kilometers and liters or miles and gallons
For those who prefer imperial units there is a units switch: enter fuel economy in mpg (miles per gallon) instead of liters per 100 km, distance in miles and price per gallon. Note that mpg measures efficiency, not consumption: the higher the number, the more economical the car. 30 mpg is about 7.8 liters per 100 km.
How to find your real consumption
The official figure comes from a lab test and is almost always optimistic. Measuring your own is easy: fill the tank to the click, reset the trip odometer, drive a few hundred kilometers of your normal trips and fill up to the click again. Divide liters by distance and multiply by a hundred — that is your real consumption, including winter warm-ups, traffic jams and the roof box.
Try the fuel cost calculator — the math runs on your device, no sign-up needed. The Finance section is already home to the discount, tip and percentage calculators, all working the same way: enter the numbers, see the result instantly.
